It's the year 2019, and women empowerment is more real and tangible than it has ever been in history. It's unhidden and in your face with constant articles online, lawsuits in the news, in the movies we watch, in the posters we walk by, in the books we read... It's there.
It's something the women in our past have dreamed of witnessing. The actions we are taking now have been the very reason they were punished or executed, but today, we - not all - have the freedom to resist and be heard.
In my family, I'm called a feminist and I'm proud of that, but what is a feminist really? Is it the loud obnoxious woman portrayed on television? Is it the silent protestor, the title put in our bio, or the constant tweeter?
It's none of those things. Just the actions taken to get their point across.
Feminism is the fight for equality and respect. The Right for a female to be paid the same as a man in the same position, the Right to be treated and spoken to with dignity and not as an object, the Right to not be touched or harassed. It's the Right to drive, to go out alone. The Right to not be thought of as incompetent because of the single factor of being a female. It's the Right to have our opinions heard on important matters. To be given the very same chances a man or her brother would and be allowed - not because someone deems it so, but because it's the right and equal thing to do.
Understand this: feminism is not a man hating movement, it's a fight to change the conversation.
And when the conversation changes, she'll let you open the jars because she knows your physical strength outweighs hers - but for now, she'll keep doing it herself, even if it hurts.
